CBD Benefits for Pets

In addition to providing benefits for humans, CBD has also been shown to have positive effects on pets. CBD or cannabidiol is a naturally occurring compound found in and extracted from hemp plants. This is different from THC, because it does not have psychoactive properties. 

What Does CBD Do?

The American Kennel Club (AKC) reported that “what scientists do know is that cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid receptors located in the central and peripheral systems”. This has the same effect in both humans and pets, where it can “help maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal, healthy state” free from stress, anxiety, inflammation, and other ailments.

The AKC is working in tandem with the Veterinary Medicine school from Colorado State University to “evaluate the use of CBD in treatment-resistant epileptic dogs”. Since CBD does not cause the high or euphoric sensation, your pets can get the benefits without risk of being out of it. However, “some people do say it seems their pets are a little out of sorts when they take CBD,” so it’s good to always consult with your veterinarian first on dosage.

CBD has been shown to effectively reduce pain in pets that may be linked to issues with aging such as osteoarthritis, aches, sores, stiff joints and more. It has also been shown to ease “symptoms associated with bowel disorders, asthmas, nausea, and a variety of other health issues commonly found in pets,” . While overall it seems CBD is safe and effective for pets, it’s important to note that it is not yet FDA-approved and there are still many studies being done on it. For these reasons, always speak with your pets veterinarian about why you want to try CBD and what amount would be appropriate to start with for your pet.
